This Tudor gem, set in the heart of Oxfordshire’s idyllic countryside, is steeped in history and is a meticulously preserved 16th-century manor house.

As the ancestral home of George Washington’s forebears, Sulgrave Manor offers a unique opportunity to explore the roots of the first President of the United States. Wander through impeccably restored rooms, adorned with authentic period furnishings, and discover the stories that echo within its walls. Knowledgeable guides bring history to life weaving tales of Tudor life and the fascinating link between Sulgrave and the Washington family.

The manor’s gardens provide a tranquil retreat. Topiary peacocks welcome visitors at the front door and densely planted borders ensure botanical interest from spring through to autumn. The Tudor Villagers Garden boasts historic vegetables and herbs, whilst mature trees provide shaded seating. Heritage fruit trees grow in the orchard and there’s a designated Silent Space if you want a quiet spot to sit and enjoy views of the surrounding rolling countryside.

Once you have visited the Manor, Garden and George Washington Exhibition pop into the small gift shop which offers locally produced goods and crafts.

Boughton Castle Banbury

Broughton Castle offers an enchanting blend of medieval splendour and natural serenity. With its captivating history, stunning architecture, and idyllic surroundings, our visit promises an unforgettable experience for those seeking a taste of England’s rich heritage.

Enjoy a guided tour of the 14th century Castle, a living testament to architectural magnificence. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of its interiors, from the opulent Great Hall to the intimate family rooms, each echoing with stories of nobility and heritage. The castle’s medieval charm offers a captivating glimpse into bygone eras.

Most of what you see today dates from the 1550’s. The Castle was a centre of opposition to Charles I and was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642.

Surrounded by picturesque gardens and a tranquil moat, Broughton Castle’s grounds are a haven for nature enthusiasts and history lovers alike. The walled garden was created in the 1890’s by Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox.

We plan to arrive at Broughton around 14.15. Bring your own picnic and find a quiet spot to relax and eat. Alternatively you can pre-order a light lunch from The Stables Café. We will ask for orders nearer the time.

Option 1 – Handmade Seasonal Tartlet served with a green salad and coleslaw £14.95

Option 2 – Chef’s Soup served with a selection of sandwiches, vegetarian £14.50

Option 3 – Posh Ploughman’s Lunch served with artisan bread including: Home cooked Ham, Mature Cheddar, Scotch Egg, Rosemary Focaccia Bread, Celery, Pickled Red Onion, Pickled Radish, Red Onion Chutney and grapes £16.50.

Timing will be confirmed 7-days before travel.

Booking your place

The cost for the day is £89 which includes return coach travel from your pick-up point, entry into Sulgrave Manor & Gardens with coffee on arrival and a guided house tour. Entry into Broughton Castle & Gardens, with guided castle tour.

A non-refundable deposit of £20 per person is payable when booking. Full payment is due 10-weeks before departure.

Copied from the Sulgrave Manor website: Please note that the grounds are uneven and paths are gravelled. The interior of the house is small and also uneven with thresholds and steps and the upper floor is only accessed by stairs. There is limited seating. To protect the historic fabric, large bags and rucksacks are not allowed inside.
