First stop, the enchanting Laskett Gardens, a horticultural masterpiece that seamlessly blends art, nature, and history – a testament to the vision and passion of its creators, Sir Roy Strong and his late wife, Dr. Julia Trevelyan Oman.

In the afternoon we get to soak up the peace and beauty of 8-acres of terraced gardens at Brobury House. Take a stroll around the enchanting gardens, water features, rare species of trees, beautiful flowering borders and views of the Wye.

The Laskett Gardens

The Laskett Gardens unfolds like a living tapestry, with carefully curated “rooms” that each tell a unique story. Discover the romantic and fragrant Rose Garden, where blooms of various hues cascade in a riot of colours, creating a sensory feast for the eyes and nose. Wander through the vibrant Long Walk, a grand promenade lined with meticulously manicured hedges and adorned with classical sculptures that pay homage to the grandeur of European gardens.

Explore this living canvas, where every plant, tree, and sculpture is thoughtfully placed to evoke a sense of harmony and balance. The intricate knot garden is a masterpiece of design looking back to the Elizabethan era, while the Cottage Garden is an intimate, whimsical space where traditional English flowers mingle with exotic specimens. Sculptures and installations are scattered throughout the garden, each carefully chosen to complement the natural surroundings.

Although the gardens remain private, in 2020 Sir Roy moved house and very generously gave The Laskett to Perennial, a charity that supports anyone working in horticulture, who will maintain the garden and its ethos.

Brobury House Gardens & Café

On arrival we will go directly to The Walled Garden Café, where our light buffet lunch will be served followed by a bite sized dessert with tea or coffee. After a short introductory talk about the garden and its history you are free to wander at your leisure.

The gardens at Brobury House were originally laid out in the 1880s when the house was built. The setting, on the banks of the River Wye by Bredwardine Bridge, is a perfect site for this terraced Victorian garden. The panoramic views of the surrounding countryside complement the formal gardens. The magnificent trees which give structure to the garden were part of the original design and provide a focal point for the gardens.

The present owners, Keith and Pru Cartwright, have been at Brobury since 2001. They have embarked on a programme of restoration and development in conjunction with their garden designer, Peter Antonius.

Booking your place

The cost for the day is £97 which includes return coach travel from your pick-up point, entry into The Laskett Gardens, with morning coffee, illustrated garden map and use of a ‘pod-caster’ self-guided tour narrated by Sir Roy. Entry into Brodbury Gardens, light buffet lunch, bite sized dessert and coffee.

A non-refundable deposit of £20 per person is payable when booking. Full payment is due 10-weeks before departure.

‘Please be aware that The Laskett’s uneven surfaces, grassed areas, narrow paths and gravel walkways make it unsuitable for wheelchair access, but work is underway to make it more accessible. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow dogs or any other pets, apart from assistance dogs.’
