There is time to get off the boat for a stroll around the iconic waterfront destination, The Quays, Salford. Visit The Lowry, named for the artist who spent much of his life in Salford and whose work is strongly associated with the city. Or take a stroll around Media City UK, the home of the BBC.

Re-join the boat at 15.00 for the journey back to Castlefields where we return to our coach for the journey home.

Itinerary

Tour Information: Outward Canal Journey

At 12.00 noon we set sail from Castlefield in central Manchester. Our journey will take in parts of the Bridgewater and Manchester Ship Canal taking about an hour and a half. Whilst sailing to Salford Quays your starter of homemade soup and a main course of chicken with vegetables will be served. All dietary needs catered for. There is a licensed bar on board. The captain will also provide a live commentary, giving interesting and historical facts about the canals and landmarks along the route.

Then we arrive at Pomona Lock and the boat is lowered onto the Manchester Ship Canal where we cruise to Salford Quays and the upper reaches of the canal. We then moor up at Salford Quays, under The Lowry Footbridge, where we disembark for an hour and a half to explore the Quays.

Free Time

We have just over an hour’s free time at The Quays. Pop into The Lowry which houses a fascinating L S Lowry Exhibition, one of Britain’s most recognisable painters whose work is full of surprises. Lowry is best known for his popular mill scenes and industrial landscapes, but his work covers a wide range of themes and subjects.

Stroll around Media City UK, the home of the BBC in the North. If you prefer to sit and watch the world go by there are plenty of seats alongside the canal and coffee shops in The Lowry.

Return canal journey

At 15.00 we set sail for the return journey to Castlefield, again via Pomona Lock. With background music playing you can then enjoy the homemade dessert followed by tea and coffee. At 16.00 we arrive back at Castlefield where our coach will be waiting.

Booking your place

The cost for the day is £82 which includes return coach travel from your pick-up point, return canal cruise and 3-course lunch on board with tea and coffee. Entry into The Lowry is free.
