Itinerary

Over the last 25 years Broughton Grange and its gardens have been substantially transformed and is now recognised as one of the most significant private contemporary gardens in Britain. We can’t describe the full extent and range of this beautiful place so it may be helpful to take a look at a map of the garden, here. Fortunately for us, following tea, coffee and cake there will be a garden tour with either the head or assistant head gardener.

Since the late 1990s, many parts of the gardens have been beautifully developed and from 2003 onwards, a substantial arboretum has been planted and continues to be developed. The tree collection at Broughton includes a wide range of interesting species and cultivars, covering an area of approximately 80 acres.

The walled garden is perhaps the centrepiece of Broughton Grange gardens and has been widely acclaimed. Designed by leading landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith, it consists of three-terraces contrasting the structure and form of topiary with wild, luxuriant herbaceous planting, whilst softly framing a beautiful rural backdrop.

The small Knot garden, comprises classical knots of Japanese holly, dwarf Japanese barberry and box, with contrasting planting within compartments.

Planted out in a more traditional style, the graceful long borders follow a gentle slope down from the parterre, leading out into the open parkland beyond. Formal yew (Taxus baccata) hedging provides a good backdrop against which the fine range of herbaceous plants show well.

Refreshments

On arrival we will have tea and coffee with cake. There is an option to order a ploughman’s lunch with bottled water or you can bring your own picnic. Seating is in available in the tea hut or outside under cover. Hot and cold drinks and cake can also be purchased on the day.

Plant Nursery

Broughton sells a very good selection of herbaceous plants at their small plant nursery, many of which are propagated from the gardens.

Travel arrangements

Departing Ellesmere at 08.30, Shrewsbury at 09.30 and Telford at 09.45 Departing. Arriving back at Telford at 18.15, Shrewsbury at 19.00 and 19.45 at Ellesmere.

All timings are provisional and will be confirmed 7-days before travel and are dependent upon traffic on the day.

We have an ‘All Weather Policy’ which means the tour will go ahead come rain or shine unless the Met Office announces it is unsafe to travel.

Booking your place

The tour price is £90 per person or £104 with ploughman’s lunch – 3 cheeses, pickles, salad and bread.

Non-refundable deposit £30 per person payable on booking. Full payment is due 10 weeks before departure.

Includes return coach travel, entry into Broughton Grange Gardens, tea and coffee with cake on arrival, garden tour and free time in the garden.

Accessibility

Around the gardens and particularly in the main walled garden there are a number of different landscape surfaces, sets of steps and steep pathways. Regrettably, this makes some areas of the garden difficult to access with devices such as wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
