Packwood House

Our first stop is Packwood House, built around 1570 by the Fetherston family. Over the following 370 years, it was extended and restored to create the Tudor-style manor house you see today.

It was gifted to the National Trust in 1941 by Graham Baron Ash, a local man whose wealth enabled him to transform the house into his dream Tudor home in the early twentieth century. The rooms you can see today reflect his love of tradition, collecting, conserving and entertaining. Look out for the star items in each room.

During your visit, you’ll wander through several meticulously furnished rooms, including the homely Drawing Room and the Great Hall, which was once a cow barn. The collection at Packwood House includes sixteenth century tapestries, technicolour stained-glass, and a teacup fit for a Queen.

Packwood’s contemporary ‘mingled’ style garden, with herbaceous borders, wildflower meadows and a beautiful orchard is the perfect place to spend a carefree day. Discover Packwood’s exciting and colourful flowers, unusual plants, bountiful kitchen garden and magnificent yew trees. There is also around 150 acres of parkland to explore with wildflower meadows with 5 different types of native orchids, ancient woodland with bluebells, oak and hornbeam.

The Garden Kitchen Café serves hot and cold food and drinks, sweet treats and ice cream. The shop is filled with gifts, homeware, books and gardening accessories and you will find a seasonal selection of plants for sale in the barnyard.

Baddesley Clinton

In the afternoon we make the short journey to Baddesley Clinton. Over the course of its 500-year history, the house has been a refuge for those seeking to escape the outside world, never more so than when it became a place of safety for Catholic priests living in dangerous times. From the bridge, moat and gatehouse entrance to the Great Hall and a 19th-century artist studio, discover the house that passed down through 12 generations of the Ferrers family.

Once you have visited the house there is time to explore the gardens and woodland walks. The Courtyard Garden, created in 1889, is home to yews, lawns and brick paths that have little changed since creation. The main charge of the Ferrers’ arms – seven mascles, or lozenges – is laid out on the lawn and is planted in its gold and red heraldic colours.

Originally the medieval residents of Baddesley Clinton would have used the garden to provide food, with stewponds as a source of fresh fish. Nowadays gardeners work hard year-round to grow vegetables and herbs. During winter of 2017-18 the vegetable garden was moved to its current position which historical research revealed was the original site – much closer to the house and a much better place for a vegetable garden.

The walled garden was created in the early 18th century as an enclosed formal garden on the sunnier side of the house. In the 1980s the sundial and formal rose beds were re-introduced and the traditional apple trees were planted. Explore the woodland, walk around the lake or simply find a quiet seat and relax.

Costs for this tour are National Trust Members £60 per person, non-members £82, includes return coach travel, entry into Baddesley Clinton and Packwood House.

£20 non-refundable deposit is payable on booking. Full payment is due 10 weeks before departure.
