Liverpool

Liverpool’s docks dominated global trade in the 19th century, with the Albert Dock at their heart. To this day the Mersey continues to play a central role in the city’s cultural life, with the Dock an integral part of the World Heritage waterfront.

25 years have passed since the Dock’s regeneration and it sits at the forefront of Liverpool’s cultural consciousness once again. Once you have explored the docks within 10 minutes walking distance you will find cultural giants including Tate Liverpool, The Beatles Story, Merseyside Maritime Museum and International Slavery Museum, alongside a kaleidoscope of shops, bars and restaurants.

The Walker Gallery and World Museum is about 15-20 minutes’ walk from the Docks. The Museum of Liverpool is at the Pier Head, as is the Tourist Information Centre. The Central Library has wonderful views right across the City from the top floor. It might be possible to visit the Royal Liver Building which is a Grade I listed building, also located at the Pier Head, along with the neighbouring Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool’s Three Graces, which line the city’s waterfront.

Finally, Liverpool One has 170 stores for your delight and when you are ready you can relax in one of the many places to eat around the waterfront area or in the town. Bus tours of the city are also available just outside the Ferry Port.

Port Sunlight

In the afternoon we will call at Port Sunlight for two and a half hours. You can either remain on the coach for a 60-minute guided tour of the village, led by an expert guide from the Museum, or leave the coach to explore independently.

While at the village see the Port Sunlight Museum which tells the story of William Lever and his vision in creating this village for workers at his Sunlight Soap factory. Explore how the village developed over the years, from the working and living conditions to the charming architecture. The museum is packed with tales and nostalgia, from displays of vintage soap packaging to Ringo Starr’s first performance with the Beatles in the village in 1962. Through film shows, interactives, models and an array of intriguing artefacts you can discover the tale of this inspirational village.

The Lady Lever Art Gallery is within walking distance. Founded and built by Edwardian philanthropist Lord Leverhulme, visitors will discover one of the most beautiful collections of fine and decorative art in the UK, including many world famous Pre-Raphaelite artworks alongside beautiful Chinese ceramics and Wedgwood jasperware. The collection was started in the late 19th century to use as advertising for the popular Sunlight Soap brand that helped to create his fortune. British art, Chinese porcelain, Roman sculpture and Greek vases as well as Eighteenth century furniture found its way into his collection and can now be seen on display.

Our visit coincides an exhibition of the enchanting world of illustrations from the Flower Fairies books by Cicely Mary Barker (1895 – 1973). To mark the 100 year anniversary of her first book, Flower Fairies of the Spring, the exhibition features around 45 original illustrations, with digital projections and costumes inspired by the fairies, designed by Vin Burnham.

First published in 1923, there were originally 170 drawings – accurate depictions of flowering plants and trees, into which are incorporated, caricature figures of fairies, designed to accompany the species drawn.

A visit to Lady Lever would not be complete without enjoying the café and shop. The Victorian themed shop has a wide range of nostalgic gifts, books and jewellery. The café serves a delicious menu of main meals, light refreshments and afternoon tea.

If you have time there is also the garden centre to visit as well as the garden walk and Memorial Garden to see.

Travel arrangements

The coach will drop-off and pick-up at a central location near the Albert Docks. Timings for the trip will be confirmed 7-days before travel.

Booking Your Place

The cost for the trip is £65 which includes return coach travel from your pick-up point and a guided 1 hour coach tour of Port Sunlight Village.

£20 non-refundable deposit is payable on booking. Full payment is due 10 weeks before departure.
